SPOILER ALERT
Temporary straightness. An affair. Just as bad, in my opinion. Here's a good way to describe it: "I agree that this was not the most compelling film, and that it was hard to like the primary characters. Who is the target audience supposed to be? Was director Lisa Cholodenko truly interested in making the film’s point about “sexuality being fluid,” or was it just that she or the production companies felt that they had to include the lesbian’s affair with a man in order to find the straight audience? I took it as the latter. Contextually speaking, they have released this American film (set in California, even!) at the end of the Prop 8 trials, and in the middle of a civil rights debate in the U.S. Regardless of the reasons behind this plot twist, the film presents a woman who identifies as a lesbian, but is probably actually bisexual. Despite the few lines of dialogue that try to explain this, the implications to the straight audience are likely either: 1) Look men, porn movies were right, or 2) Look homophobes, lesbianism is a choice and YOU were right. Of course, in Toronto, it’s 3) Why are these gays acting like dinks?" Read more:
