History stuff (pics)
Went to Tutbury Castle today and learnt lots! Back in the days when they had The Plague to deal with, doctors protected themselves by wearing something similar to this over their face (this one's from Venice,Italy, and is just decorative) - the originals were made of leather. In the 'beak' they would stuff lavender so they didn't inhale the Plague germs. Because of the mask's resemblence to a duck's beak doctors became known as 'quacks.' The table below was known as a 'three plank table' for an obvious reason. When there were visitors the top would be turned over to the varnished side to impress the visitors. The next morning the visitors would come to breakfast and find that the table top had been turned back to the plain and much used side and would understand that they'd outstayed their welcome. Hence the saying 'the tables are turned.' Mary,Queen of Scots was imprisoned on 4 occasions at Tutbury Castle. These are exact replicas of dresses she wore A replica of embroidery by Mary,Queen of Scots
